LANCASTER, Pa. – First-half goals by seniors Ashley Kristen and Ainsley Gill powered No. 2 Duke to a 2-0 shutout of No. 6 Maryland Friday on the opening night of the B1G/ACC Cup.

The Blue Devils improved to 5-0 all-time at the four-team tournament, held at Spooky Nook Sports, the home of USA Field Hockey. Head coach Pam Bustin’s squad also picked up its second consecutive shutout, moving to 2-0 on the season.

“So impressed, again, with the entire team effort on the defensive side,” Bustin said. “I think they want the ball so much that everybody’s working together to try to give ourselves an opportunity to retrieve the ball higher on the field, and it worked tonight.”

Both sides attacked from the opening whistle but a breakaway by senior back Alyssa Chillano five minutes in set up a Kristen tally that gave Duke the early advantage. Kristen’s second goal of the season came on a rebound shot at the near post.

The Blue Devils continued to attack the circle, setting up the first corner of the evening in the 17th minute. A ball from Chillano on the left side found the stick of Gill for the tip-in, putting Duke’s lead at 2-0.

Maryland registered one shot on a corner opportunity at the 11:28 mark but the Blue Devils would keep the clean sheet through the half.

The stalwart defensive performance continued in the second period, as Duke held the Terrapins without a second shot for over 25 minutes. Redshirt sophomore goalkeeper Sammi Steele cemented the effort with a pair of saves inside the final eight minutes to secure the seventh shutout of her career.

For the match, the Blue Devils led in shots, 20-5, and drew eight corners to one by Maryland.

The Terrapins’ Sarah Holliday totaled 13 saves on the evening.

“This is a pretty mature team,” Bustin said. “I’m really proud of the fact that we’ve got a senior group that has worked their way to this position … It’s not just them – it’s the whole team following. But to have that experience has brought us to this point. Our challenge is to see how far we can take it and keep it going.”

The Blue Devils round out B1G/ACC Cup play Sunday, facing No. 14 Northwestern at 11 a.m. at Spooky Nook Sports. Live stats for the contest will be available here.
