DURHAM, N.C. – Blue Devils Sammi Steele and Rose Tynan swept the ACC Player of the Week honors Monday after leading second-ranked Duke to a pair of road wins against top-20 opponents over the weekend.
Tynan racked up seven points in the two contests to earn ACC Offensive Player of the Week recognition for the first time in her career. She opened the scoring just four minutes into Friday evening’s 3-2 overtime shootout victory at No. 9 Boston College and found the back of the boards again in the second round of the shootout against the Eagles, helping the Blue Devils prevail following over 100 minutes of action. In Sunday’s non-conference matchup with No. 22 Boston University, Tynan scored the game’s first goal, assisted on the fourth and added one more of her own in the 65th minute. The junior forward from Auckland, New Zealand matched her career-best performance with five points in the 5-1 win.
Tynan’s nine goals this season lead all Blue Devils while her three assists are tied for first on the team. She also ranks among the top three players in the conference in goals per game (0.90) and points per game (2.10).
Steele was tabbed the ACC Defensive Player of the Week for the second time this fall after matching her career best with nine saves in Friday’s shootout victory over Boston College. The redshirt sophomore goalkeeper from Eagleville, Pa., anchored a veteran back line that held strong against 12 shots and five penalty corners by the Eagles in the two overtime periods. She also turned away Boston College players on three of five shootout attempts. For the evening, Steele allowed just two goals on 22 shots. At Boston University Sunday, Steele limited the Terriers to a lone goal on a penalty corner in the 27th minute and recorded three saves.
Steele continues to pace all ACC goalkeepers in save percentage (.809) and is also second in the conference with a 0.86 goals against average through 10 games.
The Blue Devils (9-1, 2-1 ACC) begin a five-game home stand this weekend, welcoming Syracuse Saturday at 12 p.m. and Iowa Sunday at 12 p.m. Both contests will be streamed on ACC Network Extra.
