DURHAM, N.C. – Head coach Pam Bustin and the Duke field hockey program are excited to welcome six freshman student-athletes for the 2018 campaign. Midfield/back Caroline Hanan comes to Durham from The Kinkaid School in Houston, Texas.

Hanan competed under the direction of Jackie Ciconte at The Kinkaid School, twice earning first team All-America laurels from the National Field Hockey Coaches Association. Hanan was also a three-time regional All-American. She racked up 32 goals and 46 assists over her final two seasons while leading The Kinkaid School to its first state title in over 20 years.

“It has been a pleasure to watch Caroline’s game sense expand and her physical presence on the field strengthen over the past two years,” Bustin said. “I believe she will adapt quickly to the collegiate pace of play and will continue to grow her game at a rapid rate.”

A recent inductee into The Kinkaid School’s Hall of Honor, Hanan has also played at the national level, taking part in USA Field Hockey’s Futures, National Indoor Championships and Junior Olympics as a member of the Texas Pride club program.

“Caroline, and her game, are absolutely ready for this next challenge,” Bustin said. “She is an intelligent and competitive student-athlete who puts her team first … a perfect match for our Duke True culture.”

Hanan joins five other incoming Blue Devils in the 2018 freshman class.

What is your favorite field hockey memory?
Caroline Hanan:
My favorite field hockey memory is when my high school team won the state championship. We had made it to the championship three of the four years I was there, but that was the first time my school team had won in over 20 years.

Why did you choose Duke?
CH:
After stepping on campus and meeting both the coaches and players, I knew this was the place for me. I wanted to go somewhere where I could play field hockey at the highest level and receive a great education, and Duke exemplified both!

What are your goals for your collegiate career?
CH: Win the NCAA Tournament.

When did you start playing field hockey?
CH:
I was in the seventh grade and I was an avid soccer player at the time, but I was required to play field hockey for school. I was a little too aggressive and ended up scaring all my friends off the field. On the bright side, I scored a lot of goals, but on the other hand my friends were all terrified of me.

To be a part of the Duke field hockey program is … buying in and respecting your fellow teammates and coaches. It is giving 110 percent, 100 percent of the time, not for yourself, but to better the team.

GoDuke.com will feature a member of the Blue Devils’ 2018 freshman class every Monday over the coming weeks.
