SUGAR GROVE, Ill. – On a day that featured bone-chilling temperatures and rain, the Duke women's golf team opened the 2017 NCAA Championship with a 37-over-par ledger of 325 at the 6,343-yard, par 72 Rich Harvest Farm in Sugar Grove, Ill.  The Blue Devils went off in the afternoon on hole No. 10 and dealt with heavy rain for the first nine holes.

Northwestern opened action with a 13-over, 301, to take the team lead, while Kent State (303), Ohio State (311), Arizona State (311), Stanford (311), Baylor (311), South Carolina (313), North Carolina (314), Southern California (315), Michigan (315) and Purdue (315) rounded out the top 11 teams.  Miami (316), Texas (317), Michigan State (317), California (319), Florida (320), Clemson (321), Furman (323), Duke (325) and Florida State (325) finished out the top 20 after 18 holes.  The average score on day one of the NCAA Championship was 80.77.

The Blue Devils are only 11 shots off the eight place team, which is who will advance to match play follow 72 holes of action.  Last year, Duke kicked off the first round in 22nd place and went on to finish sixth in Eugene, Ore.

Junior Leona Maguire, the No. 1 ranked player in the Golfweek individual listings, opened play with a five-over-par, 77, but played her final 10 holes at even par.  She opened action in terrible conditions and was four-over through her first five holes.  Maguire, a native of Cavan, Ireland, then had a bogey on No. 17, before making the turn with a five-over, 41.  She played the final nine at even par with nine straight pars.  Maguire hit 11 fairways, 12 greens and rolled 34 putts.  She enters the second round tied 19th and five shots off the individual lead.

August Kim of Purdue and Elodie Van Dievoet of Michigan each turned in rounds of even-par, 72, to kick off the championship and hold the lead.  For the day, Maguire netted 13 pars to tie for the lead after day one.

Registering Duke's only birdie of the day was junior Lisa Maguire, who turned in a 10-over, 82, on day one and is tied 80th overall.  Maguire collected back-to-back pars during tough conditions to open her day, but then played the next seven holes at eight-over to make the turn with an eight-over, 44.  On the back nine, Maguire totaled three pars on hole 1-3 and then went bogey, double-bogey and birdie.  On the 334-yard, par four sixth hole, she hit her seven-iron to within six feet and drained the birdie.  Maguire, who is from Cavan, Ireland, closed the day with three pars on her way to finishing with an 82.  She hit eight fairways, five greens and had 31 putts.

Both Virginia Elena Carta and Ana Belac each turned in rounds of 83 and are tied for 92nd overall.  Carta, a product of Udine, Italy, was seven-over on the front nine and only four-over on the back.  Belac, who hails from Portoroz, Slovenia, was six-over-par on the front nine and five-over during the final nine.  She hit four greens, six fairways and had 32 putts.

Senior Sandy Choi signed for a collegiate worst round of 87 Friday as she hit a season-worst four greens to go along with hitting 11 fairways and rolling 34 putts.

With Duke turning in only one birdie, it ranked tied for last along with Florida State and Clemson.

Duke will kick off action Saturday in the second round beginning at 9:36 a.m. (ET) along with Furman and South Carolina.  The weather is expecting to be rainy with temperatures in the mid-50s.
