BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The Duke rowing team capped its regular season with three wins in four races Saturday at the Dale England Cup. As a team, the Blue Devils, ranked No. 17 this week, placed third overall with 45 points. The host and No. 16 Indiana squad won with 60 points while Notre Dame (48) took second and San Diego (27) fourth.
After waiting four hours for thunderstorms to pass through the area, Duke's 2V8, V4 and 2V4 all claimed wins Saturday while the V8 placed fourth.
In the opening race of the day, the Blue Devils' V8 took fourth with a time of 6:44.6. Indiana led from start to finish, crossing the line in 6:35.6. Notre Dame (6:39.2) placed second with San Diego (6:43.55) coming in third.
Duke bounced back in a big way, claiming the next three events. The 2V8 started the march toward the finish line, leading the entire 2,000 meters and just brushing past the Hoosiers. The Blue Devils finished in 6:50.50 while Indiana finished in 6:50.74. Notre Dame (6:52.50) and San Diego was fourth (7:04.57).
The V4 led by five seconds at the 1,000-meter mark and stretched the winning time to nearly six seconds to claim the race in 7:45.7. Notre Dame took second in 7:51.36 with Indiana third (7:55.52) and San Diego fourth (8:05.7).
In Duke's final race of the day, the Blue Devils' 2V4 finished more than five seconds ahead of the field with a time of 8:01.3. The Fighting Irish claimed another second place (8:06.73) with San Diego picking up third (8:11.36) and the host Hoosiers rounding out the race (8:19.13).
Duke has next weekend off of competition before returning to action Saturday, May 13, in Clemson for the ACC Championship.
