PRINCETON, N.J. – Duke sophomore Shannon Tierney has been chosen to participate in the Women's U23 National Team Selection Camp. The sweep camp that Tierney is invited to will be overseen by Duke head coach Megan Cooke Carcagno in Princeton Junction, N.J., beginning on Monday, June 5.
At Sunday's ACC Championship, Tierney earned Second Team All-ACC accolades. She has been a member of the V8 for every race this spring, helping the boat to a title at the Carolina Cup and a third-place finish at the Clemson Invite. Following the Carolina Cup win, the boat was tabbed the ACC Crew of the Week for its performance. The boat clocked its best time of 6:19.405 at the Longhorn Invite, where it took third to Iowa and San Diego.
As a freshman, Tierney was a key member of the 2V8 throughout the season. She was a member of the ACC Crew of the Week after the 2V8 won its Carolina Cup race in 6:37.6, the second-fastest mark in Duke history. Her performance with the 2V8 helped the Blue Devils tie for first with No. 14 Indiana and No. 17 Notre Dame at the Dale England Cup as the boat won both of its races, finishing in 6:47.3 and 6:45.5. At the ACC Championship, Tierney helped the boat from a No. 3 seed to a second-place finish with a photo finish against Notre Dame as Duke placed second overall, its best performance since 2006. With the 2V8 during the NCAA Championships, she won the NCAA C Final title with a time of 6:34.803.
The selection camp will determine the US group for the U23 World Championships, which will take place in Plovdiv, Bulgaria, from July 19-23. The American group will field 1x, 2x, 2-, 4x, 4- and 8+ crews.
