Darius Wei will enter his sixth year with the program in 2018 after joining the Duke coaching staff in July of 2012. He is a coaching veteran of over 10 years with stints at the University of Rochester (2002-08), the Northwest Fencing Center (2008-2011) and the Vega Fencing Academy (2011-12).
In his fifth season as the staff’s foil specialist, Wei helped guide the Blue Devil men to a 20-4 overall record while the women bested a 17-8 ledger. Wei mentored a men’s foil unit that featured freshmen Eoin Gronningsater and Jonathan Schwartzman, who produced 43 and 42 wins, respectively, and a women’s squad that boasted two fencers with at least 30 victories. At the ACC Championships, Gronningsater captured bronze while Julia Lee finished fourth. At the Mid-Atlantic/South Regional, Lee notched first while Schwartzman and Gronningsater went second and fourth, respectively. Wei also led Lee, Gronningsater and Schwartzman to the NCAA Championships in Indianapolis, Ind., as Gronningsater and Schwartzman were just shy of All-America status at 13th and 14th, respectively.
Previously, Wei coached at the Northwest Fencing Center in Portland, Ore., working with the senior women’s foil team that won back-to-back national championships in 2008 and 2009 and the senior men’s foil team which won a national championship in 2010 and a bronze medal in 2011. Athletes who have trained with Wei have earned success at a high level, including North American Cup finals, National Championships and NCAA Championship berths.
A native of Greenwood, Ind., Wei holds a B.S. in Computer Science from the Rochester Institute of Technology (2001). He is married to Kathryn Pierrynowski.
