RICHMOND, Va. – Two Blue Devil freshmen garnered 2020 U.S. Olympic Team Trials cuts to highlight Duke’s weekend at the TYR Pro Swim Series in Richmond.

Cabell Ann Whitlow punched her ticket to next summer’s trials in the women’s 200-meter butterfly in winning the event ‘B’ final Friday evening. She tapped the wall at 2:13.67 to come in under the long course standard of 2:14.59. Classmate Shayna Hollander also secured her trials cut Friday in the 100 backstroke, coming in at 1:02.68 to win the ‘C’ final.

Over the course of the weekend, Whitlow also competed in the 50 butterfly (28.73) and 200 individual medley (2:22.04) while Hollander was back in the water for the 200 backstroke (2:21.19) and 100 freestyle (59.58).

Sophomore Zach Washart was 14th Saturday in the men’s 1,500 freestyle (16:33.24) and a number of current and former Blue Devils earned spots in ‘B’ finals. Isabella Paez, a 2018 Duke graduate, was fourth in her heat of the 100 butterfly (1:00.98) and seventh in the 200 butterfly (2:18.19) ‘B’ final. Sophomore Connie Dean placed third in the ‘B’ final of the 400 individual medley (4:55.97), followed by freshman Zoe Lusk in sixth (5:04.02). Dean also competed in the ‘B’ final of the 200 breaststroke (2:37.86), where she was joined by sophomore Halle Morris (2:40.43).

Other ‘B’ finalists in Richmond included sophomore Quinn Scannell in the 50 backstroke (30.49), freshman Easop Lee in the 200 butterfly (2:18.94) and 200 backstroke (2:18.99), freshman Melissa Pish in the 400 freestyle (4:24.69) and 100 freestyle (56.74), Lusk in the 200 individual medley (2:21.89) and Morris in the 50 breaststroke (33.47).

The 2020 U.S. Olympic Team Trials – Swimming are slated for June 21-28, 2020 in Omaha, Neb.
