INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Junior Leah Goldman and the Blue Devils’ 200-yard medley relay turned in top-20 finishes to highlight the third day of action at the 2017 NCAA Championships Friday at the IU Natatorium.
After competing on Duke’s 200 freestyle relay that garnered an 18th-place finish Thursday, Goldman and freshman Alyssa Marsh were both back in action Friday in the 100 butterfly preliminaries. Goldman moved up six spots from her showing in the event at last year’s NCAA Championships, placing 18th overall (52.14) following a swim-off against Michigan’s Vanessa Krause. Marsh was 30th in the field with a time of 52.52.
Marsh returned to the water later in the morning, joining sophomore Maddie Hess, senior Ashleigh Shanley and senior Maddie Rusch in the 200 medley relay. The Blue Devil quartet turned in a mark of 1:37.61 to tie for 19th.
Sophomore Mackenzie Willborn rounded out Duke’s day in Indianapolis in the three-meter springboard diving preliminaries. A first-time NCAA qualifier, Willborn totaled 294.20 points to come in 23rd overall. She topped the 50-point mark twice over the course of her list, including in the fourth round when she earned 57.40 points on a reverse 2 ½ somersault.
The NCAA Championships reach their conclusion Saturday, with Goldman and Marsh both eligible to compete in the 100 freestyle. Willborn and junior MaryEllen Targonski are slated to represent the Blue Devils in the platform diving competition, while the program is also eligible to compete its 400 freestyle relay. Preliminaries begin at 10 a.m., followed by diving trials at 12:15 p.m. and finals at 6 p.m. Video coverage will be available on NCAA.com for the morning session and on ESPN3 for the evening session.
