CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Blue Devil swimmers opened action at the Janis Hape Dowd Carolina College Nike Invitational Friday at North Carolina’s Koury Natatorium.

Freshman Carly Perri kicked off Friday evening’s finals session with a strong showing in the women’s 500-yard freestyle, clocking a season-best mark of 5:01.51 for fourth place.

The momentum continued in the 200 individual medley, as junior Sean Tate claimed victory for the Duke men (1:48.79). Earlier in the day, Tate cracked the program’s all-time top 10 in the event with a 1:48.63 preliminaries swim that was also good for an NCAA 'B' cut. On the women’s side, senior Catie Miller was second at 2:03.79 – just off of her career best – and junior Susan Hynes followed just behind in third with a career-best mark of 2:04.18.

To round out the women’s events, senior Maria Sheridan was third (23.91) and junior Alyssa Arwood sixth (24.70) in the 50 freestyle, with both Blue Devils dropping time from their preliminaries performances.

Duke hosts the second day of the three-day invitational Saturday in Taishoff Aquatics Pavilion, with preliminaries beginning at 10 a.m. and finals at 6 p.m. Live results can be found here or on the Meet Mobile app.
