MINNEAPOLIS – Junior Evan Moretti captured honorable mention All-America accolades for the second time in his career, finishing 13th in the one-meter springboard diving competition Thursday at the NCAA Championships.
Making his third consecutive appearance at the NCAA meet, Moretti returned to the national stage in impressive fashion. Sitting 28th halfway through Thursday’s one-meter preliminaries, the Scarsdale, N.Y., native totaled 197.10 points on his final three dives to vault into 14th place. Moretti’s preliminaries performance was capped by a forward 2.5 somersault with one twist in the final round that received an award of 70.40 from the judges.
Moretti’s 14th-place finish (348.60) secured him a spot in Thursday afternoon’s consolation final, which he opened with back-to-back dives scoring over 50 points. After dipping to sixth in the third round, Moretti responded by topping the 60-point mark on his final three dives to finish with a score of 339.10. That placed him fifth in the consolation final and 13th overall, and ensured the Blue Devil men a spot in the final team standings for the third consecutive season. Duke enters Friday’s action 29th with four points.
The top-16 finish gave Moretti the second honorable mention All-America honor of his career after he previously achieved the feat on the three-meter board as a freshman in 2016. He became the third repeat All-American in men’s program history, joining fellow divers John C. Connor (1949, 1950) and Nick McCrory (2010, 2011, 2013, 2014).
Moretti was joined in Thursday’s one-meter competition by teammate Nathaniel Hernandez, who qualified for NCAAs for the second-straight year. Hernandez placed 27th in preliminaries with a score of 309.15. His highest scoring dive of the day came in the fifth round, when he received 58.50 points on a reverse 2.5 somersault.
Both Moretti and Hernandez will be back in action this weekend at the University of Minnesota’s Jean K. Freeman Aquatic Center, with Moretti taking to the three-meter board Friday and both divers competing in Saturday’s platform competition.
