Divers Strong On Day Two of Zone B Championships

AUBURN, Ala. – A day after earning his second straight trip to the NCAA Championships, sophomore Evan Moretti added qualification in a second event, the three-meter springboard. In total, five Blue Devil divers reached event finals to highlight a strong second day of competition at the NCAA Zone B Diving Championships, hosted by Auburn.

Moretti headlined a trio of Duke men in the three-meter springboard finals, adding the event to his NCAA repertoire by virtue of a top-10 finish. He was 10th overall with a combined score of 705.85 after improving upon his preliminaries score with an award of 358.20 in finals. The Scarsdale, N.Y., native concluded the evening with 73.50 points on an inward 2 ½ somersault to maintain his position in the top 12.

Sophomore Josh Owsiany had another solid springboard showing Tuesday, joining Moretti in improving on his preliminaries mark in the three-meter final. Owsiany recorded the highest-scoring dive of the opening round in preliminaries, garnering an award of 68.20 from the judges on a forward 3 ½ somersault. He went on to place 11th in the event finals with a combined score of 702.85.

Freshman Nathaniel Hernandez reached the first Zones final of his collegiate career, placing 16th in preliminaries with a score of 331.70 points. Hernandez also improved upon his list in finals, moving up to 13th at the end of the evening with 366.50 points for a combined total of 698.20 points. He topped the 60-point mark three times in finals, including on an inward 2 ½ somersault to close out the competition.

Sophomore Mackenzie Willborn paced the Blue Devil women for the second straight day, advancing to the finals of the one-meter springboard competition. The Flower Mound, Texas native was 15th in preliminaries (259.50) before improving on her list in finals with an award of 273.55. Willborn rounded out the day with 50.70 points on a reverse 1 ½ somersault with 1 ½ twists for a combined score of 533.05, placing her 14th in the field.

Junior MaryEllen Targonski also advanced to the one-meter finals in her first action of the Zones meet. Following a steady preliminaries performance that netted her 266.55 points, she went on to add 250.70 points in finals for 17th place overall (517.25).

Also competing for Duke in the one-meter preliminaries were senior Kirby Quinn (247.15), sophomore Lizzie Fitzpatrick (245.85) and freshman Jaina Gaudette (223.80). The trio finished 20th, 24th and 34th, respectively.

The NCAA Zone B Diving Championships wrap up Wednesday with preliminaries and finals of the women’s and men’s platform competitions. Action begins at 11 a.m. ET in Auburn, with live results available here.
