EAST MEADOW, N.Y. – A number of swimmers with Duke ties competed at the U.S. Open over the weekend in East Meadow, N.Y.

Blue Devil alumna Ashley Twichell totaled three top-two finishes over the course of the meet, taking home a gold medal last Wednesday in the 800-meter freestyle (8:30.63). The 2011 Duke graduate and former volunteer assistant coach was also second in the 400 freestyle (4:10.89) Thursday and in the 1,500 freestyle (16:10.99) Sunday.

The performance came after Twichell took home a pair of medals last month at the 2017 FINA World Aquatic Championships in Budapest, Hungary. She won the world title in women’s five-kilometer open water swimming and earned silver as a member of the United States’ 5K team relay.

Sophomore Kylie Jordan competed in three events over the course of the meet, earning a finals spot Friday in the 100 butterfly. She finished 24th overall (1:01.26) in that race, in addition to swimming in the preliminaries of the 200 butterfly (2:19.89) and the 200 individual medley (2:24.26).

Classmate Alyssa Marsh joined Jordan in the 100 butterfly preliminaries (1:02.12) and also took to the water in the 100 freestyle (57.65) and the 100 backstroke (1:04.44). Marsh, who placed fourth overall in the 50-meter butterfly at the USA Swimming 66 National Championships earlier this summer, reached the 50 freestyle ‘B’ final Sunday evening. She came in 16th at 26.42.

Two incoming Blue Devil freshmen were also in action at the Nassau County Aquatics Center, as Spencer LaFata followed up a 25th-place finish in the 1,500 freestyle with a 27th-place showing Sunday in the 800 freestyle (8:17.02). Thursday’s events in East Meadow saw LaFata race in the 400 freestyle preliminaries (4:00.81).

Fellow freshman Halle Morris advanced to event finals in the 100 (1:12.04) and 200 breaststroke (2:37.46), finishing 24th and 30th, respectively.
