DURHAM, N.C. – Sophomore swimmer Spencer LaFata was selected the Duke Student-Athlete of the Week Wednesday after turning in a strong performance in Saturday’s regular season finale at North Carolina.
LaFata, a native of Pelham, N.Y., came from behind in thrilling fashion to earn a pair of individual first-place finishes against the Tar Heels. His win in the 500-yard freestyle (4:33.78) late in the meet helped the Blue Devil men push past their Tobacco Road rivals to secure the dual meet victory, 155-145. In addition, LaFata’s time of 9:16.84 in winning the 1,000 freestyle was good for the fourth-fastest in program history.
The dual meet win over North Carolina marked the third in as many seasons for the Duke men and women.
Up next, the Blue Devils and the Tar Heels share hosting responsibilities for this weekend’s Janis Hape Dowd Nike Invitational. Preliminaries and finals Friday, Feb. 8 and Sunday, Feb. 10 will take place at North Carolina’s Koury Natatorium and both sessions Saturday, Feb. 9 will be held at Duke’s Taishoff Aquatics Pavilion.
