DURHAM, N.C. – Sophomore Kelly Chen and freshman Maria Mateas earned Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) NCAA Division I All-American honors, as announced by the organization Thursday.

The criteria for ITA All-America honors include earning a top 16 seed into the NCAA Singles Championship, advancing to the round of 16 at the NCAA Championship or finishing in the top 20 of the final Oracle/ITA Singles Rankings.

Chen garners the accolade for the second straight year as she finished the year ranked No. 8 in the country.

The Cerritos, Calif., native recently reached the semifinals of the NCAA Singles Championship in Orlando, Fla., and finished the year with a 35-9 overall ledger. Chen defeated 18 ranked opponents during the season playing Duke’s second and third courts that included three higher ranked foes during the individual championship.

Before her loss in the semifinals, Chen won 12 consecutive matches dating back to April 10 and was a vital part in Duke’s success as a team as the Blue Devils made back-to-back appearances at the finals of the ACC Championship and semifinals of the NCAA Team Championship and ITA Indoor National Championship.

Joining Chen as an All-America is Mateas who appeared at No. 18 in the final ITA rankings. The ITA National Rookie of the Year played on Duke’s top court all season where she earned the highest ranking of eighth in the country.

A first team All-ACC selection, Mateas posted an 8-3 ledger in conference play, highlighted by upsetting NC State’s then eighth-ranked Anna Rogers (6-1, 6-2) to help the Blue Devils defeat the ninth-ranked Wolfpack. In the fall, Mateas defeated then second-ranked Makenna Jones of North Carolina (6-1, 6-4) in the semifinals of the ITA All-American.

2019 marks the 18th season in program history that Duke has earned multiple All-America nods.
