DURHAM, N.C.-- Thirty-two student-athletes from the Duke Athletic Department participated in the BACKpack 2 School Event, hosted by the Urban Ministries of Durham (UMD) and Families Moving Forward (FMF). The event supported low-income families with children preparing for the first day of school on August 27th. The BACKpack 2 School event was held at the Durham Convention Center, and members from the Duke men’s soccer, women’s track & field, women’s swimming & diving, and women’s tennis teams volunteered at the event.
Children received school supplies, backpacks, books, and clothes, as well as had the opportunity to participate in a number of fun and educational activities. Student-athletes discussed healthy eating options, favorite subjects, and hosted a raffle with Duke Athletics team gear.
Senior women’s tennis player, Ellyse Hamlin, stated, “It was an amazing experience to participate in the BACKpack 2 School Event. It meant a lot to me to be able to share my experiences with these kids and get them excited about going to school. I love getting the chance to interact with kids and help make a difference."
