DURHAM, N.C.-- The Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC), in partnership with the Duke Community Service Center, sponsored three families through the Project Share Program. Project Share, a program which Duke University has participated in for almost four decades, is an annual community service program that provides gifts to local families during the holiday season. Over the past 12 years, Duke student-athletes have joined in with the holiday spirit.

This year, under the first-year leadership of SAAC Reps Erin Marsh (T&F), Mackenzie Cole (WS), and Kincey Smith (VB), Duke student-athletes raised over $1,200 dollars from the varsity sports teams. Kincey Smith stated, “I am so happy I was able to be a part of organizing Project Share. Delivering the presents to the families’ houses was so refreshing and was one of the highlights of my year.” SAAC members organized collecting the donations and wrapping the gifts for the families, with important volunteer contributions from track & field, women’s soccer, field hockey and rowing. The families provided holiday wish lists and the student-athletes shopped, wrapped, and delivered the gifts to families. This year, student-athletes delivered gifts to two families, with a total of 23 individuals sponsored.

Erin March of the track & field team commented on the significance of Project Share: “Project Share is an important program, because not only does it allow us to be active members of our community, it allows us to all come together and contribute to giving back to families that are not as fortunate as we may be.”

Each year the program provides funding to support over 300 adults and children in the Durham Community. The program is overseen by Domonique Redmond, assistant director of programs, at the Duke Community Service Center.
