DURHAM, N.C. –  For the third time Wednesday, a Duke Blue Devil was chosen in the 2019 Major League Baseball First Year Player Draft, as sophomore right-handed pitcher Bryce Jarvis was taken in the 37th round (1,125th overall pick) by the New York Yankees.

Jarvis is the fifth Blue Devil to be selected in this year’s draft, joining teammates Graeme Stinson (Tampa Bay Rays, fourth round, 128th overall), Ben Gross (Minnesota Twins, 10th round, 299th overall), Kennie Taylor (New York Mets, 14th round, 418th overall) and Adam Laskey (Chicago Cubs, 19th round, 582nd overall). With Jarvis’ selection, the Blue Devils have now had at least five players drafted in the last two drafts, marking the first time in Duke history.

A draft-eligible sophomore, Jarvis has been one of the most reliable arms on the Duke pitching staff across the last two years.

After serving as primary reliever for the 2018 season, Jarvis stepped into the role as a starter for the 2019 campaign to bolster the Blue Devil rotation. The second-year right hander has earned five wins this season as part of his 5-1 overall record, while leading the team in strikeouts with 85. Jarvis ranks 17th in the ACC in ERA with a mark of 4.06 (31 ER/68.2 IP), while placing 10th overall in punchouts.

The Brentwood, Tenn., native turned in a spectacular performance this past weekend in the NCAA Morgantown Regionals on his way to earning Most Valuable Player honors. Jarvis made the start in Duke’s second game of the regional, tossing a career-long 8.0 shutout innings, allowing six hits and one walk while striking out a career-high 11 batters against top-seeded West Virginia to help Duke to its second consecutive NCAA Regional Championship.
