OMAHA, Neb. – Duke sophomore catcher Michael Rothenberg posted a strong showing in the 2019 College Home Run Derby on Saturday evening at TD Ameritrade Park.
Rothenberg began the derby with an opening-round score of 13, ranking second to start the night and advancing himself to the event’s second round. The Boca Raton, Fla., native followed that up with 12 long balls in the second round to set his two-round total at 25. Rothenberg’s 25 home runs tied him for second overall through two rounds of action, but Ole Miss’ Tyler Keenan won the tiebreaker to edge the Blue Devil catcher and advance to the final round of the 2019 College Home Run Derby.
A member of the ACC Baseball Championship All-Tournament Team, Rothenberg led the Blue Devils with home runs this season while recording a team-high 52 runs batted in. The Duke backstop ranked second on the team in both on-base percentage (.390) and slugging percentage (.481), while placing first in walks with 33.
