Stephen Kovacs, formerly the head men's fencing coach at the Stevens Institute of Technology, joined the Duke fencing program in August, 2010, as an assistant coach.

In his first season, Kovacs coached a Duke saber squad that finished the year 22-1 for the best record in school history. He also coached NCAA Women's Saber Champion Becca Ward who captured her second national title at the 2011 NCAA Championships.

Kovacs, a former standout saber and captain on the NCAA Champion Columbia University teams in 1992 and 1993, was Stevens' head coach for the 2009-10 season. Under Kovacs, the Ducks went 13-7 and recorded a second-place finish at the Middle Atlantic Collegiate Fencing Association (MACFA) Championships. Kovacs mentored both the MACFA men's saber champion, Dzmitry Lamianski, and the MACFS men's epee champion, Daniel Burke, during the stint.

Eight of Kovacs' fencers at Stevens qualified for the NCAA Regionals, including Lamianski who claimed a seventh-place finish. Stevens won its final seven matches of the regular season while winning the MACFA saber crown and taking second in the epee field.

A 1995 graduate of Columbia University with a degree in European History and Economics, Kovacs began his coaching career at The Pingry School in 2008. At Pingry, an independent college preparatory day school for students in grades K-12, Kovacs served as an assistant fencing coach and a teacher of English and History. Along with moving to the collegiate level in 2009-10 at Stevens, Kovacs served as an assistant saber coach at the New York Athletic Club.

Kovacs enjoyed a decorated prep and collegiate fencing career that included five Junior National Championships. At Columbia, he was honored with the Outstanding Senior Athlete Award and the George Cointe Award for Sportsmanship and Excellence. Along with winning back-to-back NCAA Championships with Columbia, Kovacs was a member of the U.S. Junior, Cadet, World and Senior World teams.

A native of Clinton, N.J., Kovacs has two children, Honor Elizabeth and Samuel Nicholas. He graduated from Columbia in 1995 and received a degree in European History and Economics.
