DURHAM, N.C. - The Duke baseball team held a pair of intrasquad games at Jack Coombs Field this past weekend to wrap up the first week of fall practice.
"They went really well," head coach Sean McNally said of the intrasquad games. "Each of them was different. We're keeping the intrasquads pretty simple. We're just trying to have our pitchers command their fastball, be aggressive and go on the attack. Offensively, we want to put the ball in play and play really hard. We've played at a high level both games."
In the first intrasquad game on Friday, the White Team topped the Blue Team 8-1. Sophomore Matt Berezo had two hits and a pair of RBI, while freshman Reed Anthes drove in three runs for the White Team. Freshman Andy Perez, sophomore Chris Marconcini and junior Ryan Munger added two hits apiece for the White Team.
Junior Marcus Stroman struck out five batters in his two scoreless innings of work for the White Team. Freshman Remy Janco and senior David Putman also pitched two shutout innings, while freshman Dalton Brown held the Blue Team to one run in two innings pitched.
"We swung the bats really well on Friday night," said McNally. "A lot of balls driven to the opposite field, which is exciting this early in the practice period."
In Sunday's intrasquad game, the Blue Team downed the White Team 5-0. Senior Will Piwnica-Worms and Betts had two hits and two RBI each for the Blue Team. Sophomore David Perkins had two hits and sophomore Mike Rosenfeld added an RBI in the win.
Freshman Nick Piscotty held the White Team to two hits in three shutout innings, while sophomore Dillon Haviland tossed three scoreless frames of his own. Sophomore Drew Van Orden secured the shutout with two scoreless innings of work.
Sophomore Aaron Cohn paced the White Team with two hits in the second game.
"Sunday, we played terrific defense," McNally noted. "Made the routine play, which has always been our hallmark and our specialty. Guys making a lot of plays outside their areas, a lot of really special plays. It was fun, it was exciting.
"I think the vibe is really, really positive," McNally added. "I think the guys are enjoying it. Playing the game is what we really look forward to. They did a really good job of it this past weekend. It was a good start for us."
