TERRE HAUTE, Ind. - Duke junior Madeline Morgan turned in an 89th-place performance among the nation's best cross country runners Monday afternoon at the 2011 NCAA Cross Country Championships, hosted by Indiana State in Terre Haute, Ind.

Morgan clocked 20:55.7 in the 6K women's race at the Lavern Gibson Championship Cross Country Course. She weathered cool and rainy conditions at race time, coming out strong to post a 10:08 split at the 3K mark.

The Birmingham, Ala., native competed at the NCAA Championships for the second consecutive season, improving upon her 152nd-place, 21:45.1 performance at last year's championship meet. Morgan advanced to the NCAA Championships as an individual qualifier following her sixth-place finish at the 2011 NCAA Southeast Regional in Louisville, Ky. on Nov. 12. Her 6K time of 20:28.3 at the regional meet was good for All-Southeast Region honors. Morgan also garnered All-ACC recognition earlier this season with an 11th-place showing at the conference meet.

"I thought it was a good race for her," said head coach Kevin Jermyn. "She's been a really consistent racer at a higher level than she ever has before ... Everything that she's done this year has been many steps above what she did last year."

Georgetown won the team championship with 162 points, while Villanova's Sheila Reid won the women's individual title for the second-straight year as she led the field with a time of 19:42. Behind the Hoyas, Washington took second (170), Villanova was third (181), Florida State fourth (189) and Oregon fifth (281) to round out the top five.

The Seminoles led all ACC teams in fourth place overall, followed by Boston College in 12th, Virginia in 20th and NC State in 23rd.

On the men's side, Wisconsin took home the team title with a score of 97, while Oklahoma State came in second (139) and Colorado (144) placed third. Arizona's Lawl Lalang was the top individual finisher, covering the 10K course in 28:44.1.

Today's races conclude the 2011 cross country season for the Blue Devils, who open the indoor track & field season in Chapel Hill at the Tar Heel Opener Jan. 13-14.
