WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Head coach Jamie Ashworth tied Kitty Harrison's Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) record with 351 wins, and the fifth-ranked Blue Devils upended Wake Forest, 7-0, Sunday afternoon in for their second conference win of the season.
In doubles, the Demon Deacons forfeit the No. 3 doubles match, which allowed the 31st-ranked duo of junior Mary Clayton and freshman Ester Goldfeld to clinch the match with an 8-1 victory over Kayla Duncan and Rebecca Siegler in the No. 1 spot. Sophomore Hanna Mar and freshman Annie Mulholland followed with an 8-5 win over Ryann Cutillo and Karen Forman in the No. 2 spot.
In singles play, Wake Forest forfeited the No. 6 matchup, but freshman and 68th-ranked Monica Turewiczcruised to a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Forman in the No. 4 spot, while Clayton, ranked 71st, picked up an easy 6-3, 6-0 win against Siegler in the No. 3 spot to clinch the match for Duke.
Mulholland, playing in the No. 5 spot, gathered her second dual singles win in as many days in defeating Brigita Bercyte, 6-3, 6-1, while 102nd-ranked sophomore Rachel Kahan ousted Cutillo, 7-6 (7-1), 6-1, in the No. 2 spot. Ranked 117th in the nation and playing in the No. 1 spot for the first time in her career, Goldfeld upset the 74th-ranked Duncan, 6-4, 7-6 (7-5), to seal the shutout for the Blue Devils.
Up next, Duke (13-2, 2-0 ACC) will travel north to face seventh-ranked Virginia on Friday, Mar. 23 at 3 p.m. The Blue Devils will then travel to Blacksburg, Va. for a match against Virginia Tech on Sunday, Mar. 25 at 1 p.m.
