DURHAM, N.C. - Junior Henrique Cunha was named the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) Men's Tennis Player of the Week for the seventh time this season, as announced Tuesday by the conference office. Cunha helped the sixth-ranked Duke men's tennis team start ACC play 2-0, guiding the Blue Devils to a pair of road wins against No. 28 NC State and No. 74 Wake Forest over the weekend.
Cunha, ranked third in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's singles poll, defeated No. 66 Jaime Pulgar of NC State, 6-4, 6-3, in the No. 1 spot to clinch a 4-3 decision against the Wolfpack on Friday. In Sunday's match at Wake Forest, the Jaú, Brazil, native posted a 6-3, 6-4 win against Danny Kreyman as Duke (13-2, 2-0 ACC) earned a 6-1 victory over the Demon Deacons. Cunha now owns a team-best ledger of 26-5 in singles play, including a 12-1 mark from the top spot in the lineup.
He also comprises the 62nd-ranked doubles tandem in the nation along with sophomore Chris Mengel. Cunha and Mengel teamed up for a pair of wins in the No. 1 position against NC State and Wake Forest, improving to 9-4 overall and 2-0 on the spring.
The Blue Devils will host third-ranked Virginia on Friday at 3 p.m. at Ambler Tennis Stadium before welcoming No. 68 Virginia Tech to Durham on Sunday at 1 p.m.
