DURHAM, N.C. - The third-ranked Duke women's tennis team moved within one win of the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) regular season title Saturday afternoon, defeating Boston College, 7-0, at a sun-soaked Ambler Tennis Stadium.
The afternoon kicked off with a strong doubles performance by the Blue Devils, as sophomore Hanna Mar and senior Monica Gorny were the first ones off the court following their 8-2 victory over Ina Kauppila and Sarah Dalton in the No. 3 spot. Less than a minute later, the nation's 28th-ranked doubles team comprised of sophomore Rachel Kahan and freshman Beatrice Capra finished off Katarina Gajic and Olga Khmylev 8-3 in the No. 2 spot to clinch the doubles point for Duke.
In the No. 1 doubles match, the 27th-ranked duo of junior Mary Claytonand freshman Ester Goldfeldrallied back from an early 4-3 deficit to take down the Eagles' 83rd-ranked tandem of Erina Kukuchi and Jessica Wacnik, 8-4, and complete the doubles sweep.
Singles play kicked off with a Duke victory in No. 3 singles as Clayton, ranked No. 71, picked up her team-leading 29th win of the season in a 6-1, 6-3 defeat of Gajic. Freshman Annie Mulhollanddowned Kaupilla, 6-1, 6-3, in the No. 6 spot before newcomer and 102nd-ranked Monica Turewiczfollowed up with a 6-4, 6-1 victory over Kelly Barry in the No. 5 spot to clinch the match.
Goldfeld, ranked 91st in the country, fought off a pesky Wacnik in the No. 2 singles match, scoring a 6-3, 6-3 win - her 23rd of the season. Capra, the nation's second-ranked player, outlasted the 110th-ranked Kikuchi, 6-2, 6-1, in the No. 1 spot, while Mar, ranked No. 51, battled through a couple break points in the second set to take down Olga Khmylev, 6-1, 7-5, to complete the shutout.
The Blue Devils will take on Maryland Sunday afternoon when they host Senior Day at 12 p.m., at Ambler Tennis Stadium. With a win, Duke will clinch a perfect record in league play and the ACC regular season title.
