DURHAM, N.C. - Seeded third overall in the 2012 NCAA Women's Tennis Championships, Duke eased past Winthrop, 4-0, Friday afternoon at Ambler Tennis Stadium. With the victory, Duke tied its school record for home wins in a season, running its unblemished mark to 13-0, while also notching its 16th shutout of the year, tying the 1998-99 team for the school record.

"I thought Winthrop competed really well," head coach Jamie Ashworth said. "To get a win, quick, and get off the courts in two-and-a-half ours is a good thing for us as we head into our match tomorrow."

The Blue Devils applied pressure out of the gates in doubles, grabbing early leads on all three courts. In the No. 3 spot, sophomore Hanna Mar and freshman Annie Mulholland defeated Camille Amrani and Ekin Gunaysu, 8-2, to give Duke an early advantage. On court two, senior Monica Gorny and sophomore Rachel Kahan clinched the doubles point with an 8-3 victory over Sandra Herrera and Giovanna Portioli.

"We got off to some good starts in singles, but tomorrow, I expect us to come out and play better," Ashworth stated. "I think the girls think the same thing. Not playing for three weeks is not an excuse, but it's tough to simulate that same match pressure in practice."

Duke did not let up in singles, as freshman and 97th-ranked Monica Turewicz cruised to a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Gunaysu in the No. 5 spot, and Mar, ranked No. 59, followed up with a 6-1, 6-3 win in the No. 2 spot.

Leading 3-0 in the overall match, the Blue Devils got some help from Kahan, ranked 85th, who clinched the overall match after ousting Herrera, 6-4, 6-1, in the No. 3 singles match.

"We were just trying to be aggressive - that's our main game plan," Kahan said. "I think we did a pretty good job with our energy, but we can do a better with that."

Duke will take on South Carolina in tomorrow's second round matchup at 3 p.m., at Ambler Tennis Stadium. The winner will earn a trip to Athens, Ga., for the round of 16 of the tournament.

"As we look ahead to tomorrow, we know that we have a (NCAA) match under our belt, and I think our expectations of ourselves will be a lot higher," Ashworth said. "Tomorrow we'll definitely be sharper."
