CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – Freshman lefty Trent Swart threw his first career complete game in his last start of the season, leading Duke to a 4-1 win over Boston College on Friday afternoon at Commander Shea Field.

Swart (4-8) matched his career high with 10 strikeouts in his complete game gem. Swart held the Eagles to one run on six hits and issued just one walk on the day.

Swart had a strikeout in seven of nine innings, including a pair of strikeouts in the first, second and seventh frames. He fanned six of the nine batters in the Boston College lineup, including striking out third baseman Spenser Payne three times.

After giving up his only run of the game in the third inning, Swart retired 21 of the final 27 batters, including 14 of the last 16 Eagles that he faced.

Duke (21-33, 9-20 ACC) jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the second on an RBI-single from second baseman Mark Lumpa.

The Blue Devils added three runs in the third to go ahead 4-0. Left fielder Anthony D’Alessandro doubled down the left field line to begin the inning. After third baseman Jordan Betts walked, designated hitter Jeff Kremer reached on an infield single to load the bases. Center fielder Will Piwnica-Worms then lined a two-run double into the gap in right center to score D’Alessandro and Betts. Two batters later, right fielder Andrew Istler lifted a sacrifice fly to the warning track in right to drive in Kremer.

Catcher Matt Pare put Boston College (21-33, 9-20 ACC) on the board with a leadoff home run in the bottom half of the third, cutting the Duke lead to 4-1.

Istler led the Blue Devils at the plate, finishing 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run. Kremer added two hits and scored a run, Piwnica-Worms had a two-run double and Lumpa had a hit and an RBI. D’Alessandro went 1-for-2 with a double and a run, while La Bruna added a hit and Betts scored once.

Boston College starter Eric Stevens (5-3) took the loss after allowing four runs on five hits in 3.2 innings.

The Blue Devils and Eagles will wrap up the series on Saturday at 1 p.m.
