ATHENS, Ga. - Duke freshman Beatrice Capraand sophomore Hanna Maropened play in first round action of the 2012 NCAA singles tournament Wednesday afternoon at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex. Both players made their first-ever appearances in the final tournament of the season, as Capra advanced to tomorrow's second round, despite Mar falling in straight sets.
Capra, seeded second in the 64-player draw, took on 42nd-ranked Jackie Wu from Vanderbilt in the first wave of matches during the morning session. The Ellicott City, Md., native jumped on Wu from the beginning, grabbing a quick 6-2 first set victory. The ITA National Co-Rookie of the Year found much of the same success in the second set to defeat Wu in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2, and advance to the second round of the tournament.
"It's nice to walk away with a win," Capra said. "It's been a while since I played without my team and it's definitely a lot different, but I'm happy to be able to get through the first round."
Mar, ranked No. 59 in the nation, took to the court in the latter part of the day against the same opponent she met in Duke's NCAA team semifinal match against Florida on Monday afternoon in No. 21 Joanna Mather. The match opened as a near replica of their three-set battle just two days prior, as Mar jumped out to a 5-2 advantage in the first set. The difference this time was Mather countering to win the next five games and take the set, 7-5. The Burr Ridge, Ill., native grabbed an early 3-1 lead in the second set over Mather, but the Gators' senior countered again and took the second set, 6-4, to defeat Mar. Mar, an All-ACC selection, closes her season with a 30-15 overall singles record.
Capra will take on Virginia's Lindsay Hardenbergh in the second round of the singles competition at 10 a.m., tomorrow, May 24, before two Blue Devil tandems open play in the doubles tournament. Junior Mary Clayton and freshmanEster Goldfeld will meet California's fifth-seeded Annie Goransson and Anett Schutting at 2:30 p.m., before Capra and sophomore Rachel Kahan square off with Georgia's Nadja Gilchrist and Chelsey Gullickson at 5 p.m. Start times for matches may change throughout the day based on court availability.
