FEDERAL WAY, Wash. - Duke divers Abby Johnston and Nick McCrory took their first steps toward representing the United States at the 2012 Olympic Games, advancing to the finals of their respective synchronized diving events Sunday on the first day of action at the U.S. Olympic Team Trials.

Johnston and Kelci Bryant tallied the highest score of the women's 3-meter synchro preliminaries at 314.10. They then pushed their score to 637.80 after the event semifinals, earning more than 70 points on all three of their optional dives. Johnston and Bryant now lead Kassidy Cook and Christina Loukas by 6.51 points heading into Thursday evening's finals.

"We had a solid performance and were in the right mental state," Johnston said. "We have a few technical things to work on that our coaches told us to think about for Thursday, and I think we're on a good path."

Incoming Duke freshman Kendall McClenney also competed in the preliminaries and semifinals of the women's 3-meter synchronized event Sunday. McClenney and Emma Ivory-Ganja of UCLA scored 234.81 points in the preliminary round and finished 12th overall in the semifinals with a cumulative score of 472.23.

In the men's synchronized 10-meter event, McCrory and David Boudia earned a score of 463.83 in the preliminaries and finished their second list of dives with 919.86 points to lead all other teams. McCrory and Boudia scored more than 90 points on their four optional dives, including 97.20 points on a back 2 ½ with 2 ½ twists in the event semifinals Sunday evening.

"We were consistent, although there were some misses here and there," McCrory said of Sunday's performance. "There are a few minor adjustments we want to make for finals, and we wanted to score higher on our voluntaries."

Scores at the Trials are cumulative, with preliminaries, semifinals and finals all counting toward team selection. The U.S. will send one women's 3-meter synchro team and one men's 10-meter synchro team to London.

The U.S. Olympic Team Trials continue through June 24, with Monday's session set to include the preliminary and semifinal rounds of the men's 3-meter synchronized competition, as well as the women's 10-meter exhibition event.
