DURHAM, N.C. - Duke Alumna Shannon Rowbury qualified for the 1,500 meter semifinals in the 2012 London Olympics.  The 2007 graduate ran a time of 4:06.03 to finish seventh in the fastest heat of the evening and earn the right to race again on Wednesday, August 8.

Rowbury looked strong in the middle of the pack during the first half of the race.  With 500 meters to go, she made her move towards the front of the pack and was able to hang on to a qualifying spot in an extremely fast heat.

This is the second Olympic appearance for the San Fransisco, Calif., native.  In 2008, she gave the U.S. its highest finish ever by a woman in the 1,500 meters by crossing the line in seventh at the Beijing Olympic finals. She hopes to improve on her performance in London.

While at Duke, Rowbury was the 2007 NCAA Indoor Track and Field Mile Champion and earned All-American honors in cross country, indoor and outdoor track.

Rowbury is scheduled to race again on August 8.  Race time is set for 2:45 p.m. (ET) and will be aired on NBC later that day.

Over the weekend, pole vaulter Jillian Schwartz represented Israel in the preliminary round.  The 2001 Duke graduate cleared 14-5.25 (4.40) but was unable to advance to the finals.
