A native of Delaware, Ohio, Martin came to Durham after teaching in Boston, Mass. A member of the golf team at Ohio Wesleyan University, he was named NCAA All-American and NCAA Academic All-American before graduating in 2009 with a degree in psychology and sports science. In 2011, Martin earned his M.A. in Education from Arizona State University.

He currently resides in Raleigh, N.C.
