DURHAM, N.C. - Duke volleyball head coach Jolene Nagel has announced the addition of Katie Fleming, who will serve as a volunteer assistant coach, to the Blue Devil staff. Fleming, a Raleigh, N.C., native and graduate of Cardinal Gibbons High School, has spent the past eight years coaching with the Triangle Volleyball Club.
"We are delighted to have Katie Fleming join our coaching staff for the 2012 season," said Nagel. She brings high-level playing experience and a significant amount of coaching experience. Her experience working with passing and defense will benefit our team immediately. We feel very fortunate to have her join us as we try to develop the 2012 team into the best it can be. I really enjoy her passion for volleyball and her desire to develop student-athletes."
This past year, Fleming served as an assistant coach with the Triangle Volleyball Club 18 Black team, which qualified for Open bid with a third place finish at the Big South National Qualifier. In 2010, she served as head coach of the 17 Black squad, guiding the team to its highest finish in program history at the Big South Qualifier.
Prior to working with the Triangle Volleyball Club, Fleming coached at her alma mater, Cardinal Gibbons, in 2004 and 2007-09. During her four years as coach of the Crusaders, she led the team to a 112-9 record. Under her guidance, Cardinal Gibbons won three conference titles while also making four state championship appearances.
Fleming graduated from Cardinal Gibbons in 2002 after earning all-state and all-conference honors in addition to 2001 NCISAA Co-Player of the Year accolades during her career. She began her collegiate playing career at Providence College and played her final two seasons at Miami University. Her second season at Providence, she set the single season digs record with 406 during the 2002 campaign. At Miami, Fleming recorded a career-best 29 digs in a single match before having her final season cut short due to injury.
In 2007, Fleming graduated cum laude from Miami (Ohio) with a B.A. in Philosophy with a minor in English/Creative Writing. She went on to earn a master's degree in Christian Studies in 2012, graduating with magna cum laude honors from the Duke Divinity School.
