DURHAM -- The Duke Athletics Leadership Program kicked off the First Year A.C.T.I.O.N. Program Monday evening with a mentor prep meeting. The First Year A.C.T.I.O.N. Program is designed to assist first year student athletes as they learn to effectively lead themselves. First year student athletes benefit from the initial establishment of peer connections, mentoring by upperclassmen student athletes, as well as developing skills to help them make the kind of choices that will allow them to be successful during their entire academic and athletic career at Duke.
Monday night’s meeting focused on preparing the upperclassman mentors for the year. Ice-breaker activities, thought-provoking discussions on leadership, and general preparation were all incorporated into the meeting. Each mentor is paired with 2 other mentors to lead a group of 10 first year students throughout the year.
The program currently has about 22 groups and 70 upperclassman mentors.
The First Year A.C.T.I.O.N. Program will meet 7 times this year, with the first meeting occurring on Monday, September 10th.
