DURHAM, N.C. - The Blue Devils kickoff their 2012-2013 season on Friday by hosting the Duke Fab-Four Invitational at the Cary Tennis Center in Cary, N.C. There are a total of 12 teams at the tournament including nine of the top 30 teams from the final 2012 Intercollegiate Tennis Association's (ITA) national team rankings.
The Fab-Four Invitational will showcase a number of players ranked in the ITA preseason rankings including three of the top 10 players in the nation and 25 of the top 125 players. In addition, the invitational will see 11 of the top 60 doubles teams compete. The Blue Devils have seven players ranked individually in the preseason rankings, which is the most of any team in the nation followed by UCLA who has five.
The women's tournament begins with the first and second round of doubles on Friday starting at 10 a.m. and the first round of women's singles starting at 2:30 p.m. The action picks up on Saturday with the final round of doubles starting at 9 a.m. and the second round of singles set to start at 10:00 a.m., followed by the third round of singles at 1:00 p.m. The finals for singles will be Sunday morning at 10:30 a.m.
Duke singles matches begin with No. 44 Mary Clayton facing off against Natalia Maynetto of Alabama. Marianne Jodoin, ranked No. 27, is set to face Emily Zabor of Alabama while No. 35 Hanna Mar will play Daniela Vidal from Purdue. Ester Goldfeld, ranked 68th, will start her singles matches against Maya Jansen of Alabama while No. 108 Annie Mulholland will begin her singles matches against Michele Stanford of Furman.
"My goals are to take advantage of the first tournament of the fall, and place myself in position for All-Americans which is coming up shortly," said senior Mary Clayton. "Definitely use this as preparation for All-Americans. I want to do the best I can for the team, and obviously individually as well, but I would love to compete in individual singles and doubles after this fall so placing myself in the best position for that would be awesome."
The Blue Devil's doubles action will start at 10 a.m. on Friday with the 27th ranked duo of Clayton and Jodoin taking on Lauren Kline and Michele Stanford of Furman. The 47th ranked tandem of Mulholland and Goldfeld are slated to begin their tournament with a matchup against Mara Schmidt and Krisztina Kapitany of Purdue.
