CARY, N.C. - The Blue Devils went 7-2 to start the weekend at the Duke Fab Four Invitational, which showcases 25 of the top 125 players in the Intercollegiate Tennis Associations preseason rankings as well as nine of the top 30 teams from last season's final ITA rankings.
In singles action, four Duke players won their round of 16 matchups to advance to the quarterfinals, led by senior Mary Clayton, who defeated Natalia Maynetto of Alabama, 6-4, 6-2. Sophomore Annie Mulholland cruised to a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Michele Stanford of Furman, while junior Marianne Jodoin downed Emily Zabor of Alabama, 6-1, 6-3. Junior Hanna Mar battled to a three-set win over Purdue's Daniela Vidal, while sophomore Ester Goldfeld fell to Maya Jansen of Alabama by a score of 6-4, 6-3.
In the morning's doubles play, the duo of Mulholland and Goldfeld advanced to the finals of the White bracket after defeating Mara Schmidt and Krisztina Kapitany of Purdue, 8-5, in the first round, and then Caroline Rohde-Moe and Marija Milutinovic of Ole Miss, 8-2, in the semifinal to advance.
The Duke tandem of Clayton and Jodoin defeated Lauren Kline and Stanford of Furman, 8-4, in the first round, but fell in the semifinals to Mary Anne Macfarlane and Maya Jansen of Alabama, 8-3.
The doubles finals are slated to begin Saturday at 9 a.m., followed by the quarterfinals and semifinals of the singles tournament at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m., respectively.
