CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The 21st-ranked Duke men’s golf team shot a nine-under 567 (285-282) to grab the 36-hole lead at the Tar Heel Intercollegiate at the Finley Golf Course. Three Blue Devils, senior Julian Suri, junior Austin Cody and freshman Motin Yeung, fired three-under 141s to enter tomorrow’s final round of play tied for fifth.

“It was a solid day for all of us,” said Cody. “We have a very deep team this year and we all wanted to get the year started off right. There is a lot of golf left but we are very happy to be in contention going into the final round.”

Suri used strong finishes in both rounds to shoot a three-under 141 on Saturday. The St. Augustine, Fla., native closed eagle-birdie in the opening round and birdie-birdie in the second round. He enters the final round tied for fifth, four shots behind the 36-hole leader, Albin Choi of N.C. State. Suri recorded 11 birdies on the day, including seven in the afternoon session.

Cody, a junior from North Charleston, S.C., fired an even-par 72 in the morning and followed up with a bogey-free 69 (-3) in the second round of play. He is tied for fifth, along with Suri and Yeung, at three-under (141) heading into the final round of play. Cody birdied No. 2, No. 3 and No. 4 in the afternoon round before closing with 14 straight pars.

“I played really well this afternoon,” Cody added. “I made a lot of pars and took advantage of my opportunities. Tomorrow is going to be a lot of fun but we will have to go post another solid round.”

Yeung, appearing in his first collegiate tournament, posted rounds of 70 and 71. He recorded eight birdies, 24 pars, three bogeys and a double-bogey on the day and played the back nine at Finley GC at three-under.

Senior Brinson Paolini got off to a strong start with birdies on No. 1 and No. 2 before suffering four bogeys over the final 10 holes for a two-over 74 in the opening round. In the second round, he posted an even-par 72 with three birdies, 13 pars, one bogey and a double-bogey. Paolini enters tomorrow's final round tied for 24th with a two-over 146.

Senior Adam Sumrall fired an even-par 72 in the opening round posting three birdies, three bogeys and 12 pars along the way. In the second round, the South Bend, Ind., native got off to a strong start with an eagle on the par 5 third hole. He dropped a stroke with a bogey on No. 5 and fell to one-over following a double-bogey on No. 7. Sumrall sandwiched a birdie on No. 11 between two bogeys to dip to +2. He added a birdie on the 165-yard par 3 14th hole and closed with three pars and a birdie on the final four holes. His birdie on the 560-yard par 5 17th hole helped him to an even-par 144. Sumrall will enter Sunday’s final round tied for 14th.

Duke was the only team in the field to shoot under-par in both rounds on Saturday. The Blue Devils enter the final round with an eight stroke lead over Charlotte and host North Carolina. UNC-Wilmington, N.C. State and East Tennessee State are tied for fourth at seven-over.

Albin Choi (N.C. State) holds the individual lead at seven-under, including a six-under 66 in the opening round of play. Patrick Barrett (North Carolina), Michael McGowan (North Carolina) and Rhys Pugh (East Tennessee State) are tied for second at four-under (140), with Cody, Suri and Yeung among a group of five players tied for fifth at three-under.

Duke also received solid efforts from three individuals. Freshman Mads Soegaard is tied for 12th overall with a one-under 143. He closed the day with five birdies, four bogeys and 27 pars. Sogaard fired a two-under 70 in the afternoon session for the first under-par round of his career. Sophomore Michael Ricaurte shot a six-over 150 and is tied for 47th, while senior Tim Gornik posted an eight-over 152.

Duke opens final round play on Sunday at 9:10 a.m. and will be paired with Charlotte and North Carolina. Live scoring for the event is available at www.golfstat.com.
