CARY, N.C. - On a day in which the Blue Devils went 5-5 in singles play and 1-1 in doubles action, junior Hanna Mar made a statement by defeating Mary Anne Macfarlane of Alabama to advance to the finals of the women's white singles bracket. Coming into the tournament, Macfarlane was ranked 10th in the nation in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) preseason polls, and Mar was ranked 35th.
In doubles action, the tandem of sophomores Annie Mulholland and Ester Goldfeld rolled through two matches Friday to advance to the finals. However, they fell to Maria Belaya and Jeltje Loomans of William & Mary by a score of 8-2 on Saturday morning. Meanwhile, the team of senior Mary Clayton and junior Marianne Jodoin claimed third place in the black bracket after being named winner by walkover over Wen Sun and Stefania Hristov of Texas A&M.
In singles play, four Blue Devils competed in the quarterfinals of the tournament, with Clayton, and Mar both advancing to the semifinals of their respective brackets. Clayton defeated Kelsey Laurente of Miami, 6-3, 2-6, 6-3, while Mar edged Blair Seideman of Yale by a score of 6-2, 1-6, 6-3. In semifinal play, Mar was the lone Blue Devil to advance to the finals, and will face Noel Scott of Texas Sunday morning for the title of the White bracket.
The final round of the Fab Four Invitational is set to begin at 10:30 a.m. on Sunday.
