DURHAM, N.C. - Duke battled no. 8 Old Dominion to a 3-1 loss Sunday afternoon at Jack Katz Stadium. The Blue Devils lone goal was scored by junior Emmie Le Marchand off a penalty stroke in the second half.
"It is unfortunate that the score was what it was," head coach Pam Bustin commented. "I think we played better today than we did Friday. I think we have to get better at our offensive opportunities. We are good defensively but that can't be it. We've got to finish on the scoring end."
Old Dominion (4-3) started the game off as the aggressor scoring two goals in the first half starting with Celine Marquet shot off a loose ball in the circle in the 13th minute of playing time. In the 26th minute, Rosario Villagra scored a goal from five yards out when she fired a shot high into the back of the net.
In the second half, Katy Fuhrman scored a goal for the Monarchs to give them a 3-0 lead with 25 minutes remaining. Le Marchand responded to the goal five minutes later by burying a penalty stroke into the back of the net to bring the Blue Devils back into the game. The goal was Le Marchand's 4th of the 2012 season.
Old Dominion outshot the Blue Devils by a margin of 15-10, and held the edge in penalty corners 7-4.
In her third start on the year, Junior Ashley Camano made an impressive six saves including a great save on a cross late in the second half.
