DURHAM, N.C. - Duke volleyball senior middle blocker Christiana Gray has been named one of 30 candidates for the 2012 Senior CLASS Award. To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence - community, classroom, character and competition.
An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School, the Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities.
Gray, a native of Carmel, Ind., led the ACC in hitting percentage for two consecutive years and ranked eighth nationally with a .396 clip in 2011. A two-time All-ACC, all-region and honorable mention All-America honoree Gray amassed a career-high 315 kills and just 68 attack errors a season ago as her .396 hitting percentage tied for second in Duke history. After 12 matches this season, Gray sits in third place in the Duke record books with a .367 career hitting percentage. She also ranks eighth and ninth, respectively, in career blocks per set (1.01) and total blocks (398).
One of the top leaders both on the team and on campus, Gray has been heavily involved in numerous community service projects while also pursuing a degree in Psychology. In addition to her involvement with Dig for the Cure, Pennies for Points and The Forest at Duke she worked with Duke's First Year A.C.T.I.O.N. program and participated in the Advancing Leaders Program and Nike Duke Leadership Internship Program.
The Senior CLASS Award winners will be announced during the 2012 NCAA Division I Women's Volleyball Championship, which will take place December 13 and 15 in Louisville, Ky. The candidate class will be narrowed to 10 finalists midway through the regular season, and those 10 names will be placed on the official ballot. Ballots will be distributed through a nationwide voting system to media, coaches and fans, who will select one candidate who best exemplifies excellence in the four Cs of community, classroom, character and competition.
