CARY, N.C. - With the start of fall practice just around the corner, the Duke baseball team took time Friday to volunteer with the Miracle League of the Triangle.

The Miracle League is a non-profit organization which allows special needs children to play America's favorite pastime - baseball. The children play on a special field - Andy's Foundation Field - at Adams Elementary School and have the opportunity to bat, run the bases and play in the field. For the fifth consecutive year, members of the Duke baseball team were on hand as "Buddies" to assist the children complete those tasks to the tune of music, a public address announcer and an ecstatic crowd.

The Miracle League was started in 1997 by the Rockdale Youth Baseball Association (RYBA) and has since expanded across the country. The Miracle League of the Triangle held its opening day September 16, 2006 and, as of 2012, the program includes 320 players on 22 teams per season with approximately 4,000 volunteer opportunities per year. There are currently 250 Miracle League organizations across the United States, Puerto Rico, Canada and Australia, serving more than 200,000 children with disabilities worldwide.
