DURHAM, N.C.-A trio of Duke University wrestlers will begin the 2012-13 season ranked among the top 30 wrestlers in their respective weight classes according to wrestlingreport.com. Diego Bencomo, Brandon Gambucci and Tanner Hough represented the Blue Devils on the preseason lists.
Hough tops the Blue Devils list at No. 26 in the 141-pound division. The sophomore returns after becoming the second Duke wrestler to earn a spot in the NCAA Championships field as a true freshman. The Johnstown, Pa., native redshirted the first half of the season before jumping into the starting lineup for the Blue Devils. He complied 23 wins his rookie campaign and went 8-5 overall in dual matches.
Gambucci, wrestling at 133 pounds, was picked 29th after a strong 2011-12 season. The redshirt sophomore shared the team lead for victories with a 23-11 overall record. He went 6-4 in dual matches and finished the year with four top-four tournament finishes.
Bencomo, a 2011 NCAA qualifier, was tabbed in the 30th spot at 184 pounds. The Phoenix native begins his final season as a Blue Devil with a 60-31 career record, including a 21-11 dual match record. Bencomo earned a spot in the NCAA Championships in 2011 and advanced to the quarterfinal round, just the second Duke wrestler to do so. He went 12-4 last season after competing in the second half of the campaign.
Duke will hold its first official practice, Oct. 15. The Blue Devils open the 2012-13 season Nov. 4 at the Hokie Open. Duke's first home match will be Jan. 23 against Appalachian State at 7 p.m.
