PACIFIC PALISADES, Calif. - After a disappointing two days in qualifying, the duo of sophomore Beatrice Capra and junior Hanna Mar are the lone tandem to represent the Blue Devils in the main doubles draw of the Riviera All-American Championship. The main draw is slated to kick off on Thursday with both singles and doubles matches being played at the Riviera Tennis Complex in Pacific Palisades, Calif.
Duke completed the second and third rounds of qualifying on Wednesday, going 3-3 on the day. In the second round of qualifying, the 43rd-ranked duo of sophomores Ester Goldfeld and Annie Mulholland downed Caroline Magnusson and Caroline Thorton of Tulane, 8-4, before falling to No. 28 Petra Niedermayerova and Karla Bonacic of Kansas State, 8-6.
In other doubles action, the 27th-ranked tandem of senior Mary Clayton and junior Marianne Jodoin fell to No. 41 Li Xi and Stephanie Nauta of Virginia, 8-3.
In the first round of the singles back draw, the Blue Devils went 3-0 seeing victories from Clayton, Jodoin, and Mar. Clayton kicked off the matches when she cruised to a 6-2, 6-0 victory over Gabriella DeSimone of USC. Mar downed Caroline Hitimana of Florida, 7-6(6), 6-2, while Jodoin outlasted Jasmine Kling of DePaul, 6-4, 4-6, 6-2.
In the second round of the singles back draw, Jodoin edged No. 75 Anna Depenau of San Diego, 7-5, 7-6(6) to advance to the consolation finals, while 44th-ranked Clayton overcame a first set loss to defeat No. 31 Tayler Davis of California 7-6(2) in the third set. Mar faced a difficult second round matchup in No. 28 Kata Szekely of Tennessee, and Szekely outlasted Mar, 6-4, 7-6(5) to advance to the consolation finals.
The main draw of the Riviera All-American begins on Thursday, and the 19th-ranked duo of Beatrice Capra and Mar are slated to face Ema Burgic and Jordaan Sanford of Baylor at 9:00 a.m. PST. The winner of that match will advance to play 3rd-ranked Annie Goransson and Annet Schutting of California on Friday.
