ATHENS, Ga. – The top-ranked Duke women’s golf team had a slow start to the Liz Murphey Fall Preview on Friday as the Blue Devils carded a 14-over-par, 302, and is tied for 14th overall with 36 holes remaining at the 6,335-yard, par 72 University of Georgia Golf Course in Athens, Ga.
Taking the opening day lead was Auburn with a one-under-par, 287, while UCLA (294), Southern California (295), Denver (295), Georgia (296), Alabama (296), North Carolina (297), Vanderbilt (297), Virginia (298), Oklahoma (299), Texas A&M (299), Tulane (300), Purdue (300), Tennessee (302), Duke (302), South Carolina (305), LSU (305) and California (306) rounded out the field.
Senior Lindy Duncan paced the Blue Devils with a one-over par, 73. The top-ranked golfer in the country completed her opening nine holes at one-under-par, 36, with eight consecutive pars and a birdie on the 488-yard, par five 18th hole. After beginning her round on the back nine, Duncan carded two bogeys on the front to register a one-over par, 73, for the day.
Duncan hit eight fairways, 13 greens and had 32 putts over her 18 holes. The Fort Lauderdale, Fla., product is currently tied for 14th, three strokes behind the leader Collins Bradshaw of Georgia at three-under par (69).
A native of Caesarea, Israel, Laetitia Beck completed her first day of action with a two-over par, 74. Beck started her round with a birdie on her opening hole, before giving the shot right back with a bogey on the par-four 11th. Beck finished with a one-over par, 38, on her opening nine. On her second nine holes of the day, Beck carded two bogeys on the par-four No. 1 and the par-four No. 9 to go along with a birdie on the 385-yard, par-four fourth hole. She is currently tied for 26th at the event.
After finishing tied for 10th in her first collegiate tournament, freshman Yi Xiao carded a four-over par, 76, on Friday to open play at the preview. Xiao, who is from China, stumbled on the front nine, carding four bogeys and two birdies on her first nine holes of the day. On her back nine, Xiao recorded seven pars and back-to-back bogeys on the second and third holes. She closed the day with six straight pars and sits in a tie for 42nd. Xiao hit nine fairways, nine greens and had 32 putts on the day.
Coming off recently playing in the World Team Amateur Championship in Turkey over the weekend, freshman Celine Boutier struggled on her first nine holes of the day carding four pars and five bogeys on her first nine holes. However, the Duke rookie rebounded on her second nine holes finishing with seven pars and two bogeys. Boutier, who is out of Montrouge, France, completed her round with a seven-over par, 79, and is currently tied for 77th.
Senior Stacey Kim stumbled out of the gate, as she fired a nine-over par, 46, on her first nine holes. However, Kim was able to finish her round strong, with two birdies over her final three holes to finish with a 12-over, 84. She is currently in 90th. The Columbus, Ga., product hit seven fairways, six greens and had 34 putts on the day.
Duke will tee off on Saturday beginning at 8:50 a.m., on hole No. 10. Live scoring will be available via www.Golfstat.com
