WIN OVER VIRGINIA: With its 42-17 win over Virginia, the Blue Devils have now won four of the five meetings with the Cavaliers under head coach David Cutcliffe … Virginia continues to lead the all-time series, 33-31 … the 25-point victory marks the Blue Devils’ most lopsided ACC win since defeating Virginia by a score of 31-3 in Durham during the 2008 season.
DUKE STARTS 5-1: By defeating the Cavaliers, Duke improves to 5-1 on the year, marking the best six-game opening to a season since the 1994 squad started 6-0 … also matches the third-best six-game opening to a season since the inception of the ACC in 1953 (6-0 in 1994; 5-0-1 in 1957; 5-1 in 1953, 1960, 1962, 1971, 1988 & 2012) … with consecutive victories over NC Central, Memphis, Wake Forest & Virginia, Duke has now put together its first four-game winning streak under head coach David Cutcliffe … prior to Cutcliffe’s arrival before the 2008 season, Duke’s last four-game winning streak came in 1994 (seven-game streak to open the season) … Duke opens the ACC slate with consecutive wins for the first time since 1994 (opened with four straight victories over Maryland, Georgia Tech, Clemson & Wake Forest) … the four-game winning streak marks the third winning streak of four or more games for Cutcliffe as a head coach (two at Ole Miss & one at Duke).
SIX-GAME POINT TOTAL: With 42 points on the afternoon, pushed its season total to 227 points scored … the 227 points through six weeks marks the highest six-game total to begin a season in school history, topping the 189 points scored by the 1945 squad.
BLUE DEVILS SCORE 28 UNANSWERED: Duke put up 28 unanswered points in the second half to rally from a 17-14 halftime deficit … the Blue Devils have recorded three come-from-behind wins this season.
DEFENSE KEEPING OPPONENTS UNDER 20: By surrendering just 17 points to the Cavaliers, Duke has now held four of its first six opponents to fewer than 20 points for the first time since 1994 when the Blue Devils limited each of their first six foes to under 20 points – Maryland (16), East Carolina (10), Army (7), Georgia Tech (12), Navy (14) & Clemson (13) … the Blue Devils also held Virginia scoreless in second half, marking the second time in three games the Duke defense has kept the opposition off the scoreboard in the second half … Duke has not surrendered a second-half point at Wallace Wade Stadium since NC Central scored a fourth-quarter touchdown on Sept. 15.
DEFENSE COMES UP BIG IN SECOND HALF: The Duke defense buckled down over the final 30 minutes of action after allowing 17 points, 18 first downs and 321 yards in the opening half of play. Virginia mustered just five first downs and 140 yards of total offense after halftime. The Cavaliers rushed for 184 yards (26 carries) in the first half but managed just two yards rushing on nine carries in the second half.
THIRTY-PLUS POINT GAMES: Duke reached the 30-point mark for the 21st time under head coach David Cutcliffe, improving to 16-5 in such games … the Blue Devils also scored at least 30 points for the fourth straight game and fifth time this season … the 42-point effort marks the first time Duke has 30-plus points in four straight games since 1989, when the squad accomplished that feat in six consecutive contests.
FORTY-PLUS POINT GAMES: Topped the 40-point mark for the 10th time under Cutcliffe, improving to 9-1 in those games ... with 42 points on Saturday, Duke has now scored 40 or more points in three of its four home games this season.
BALANCED ATTACK ON OFFENSE: Duke collected 20 first downs and 394 yards of total offense against the Cavaliers. The Blue Devils posted 212 yards passing with 182 yards on the ground. Duke collected nine first downs on the ground and eight through the air.
TURNOVER MARGIN: Duke did not commit a turnover on Saturday, finishing the game +2 in turnover margin on interceptions from Tony Foster and Ross Cockrell. The Blue Devils are +5 in turnover margin over the last two weeks.
DE KENNY ANUNIKE: Recorded a quarterback sack in his sixth straight game to open the 2012 season … now has eight-and-a-half sacks over his last nine games dating back to last year … also leads the Blue Devil defense with four-and-a-half sacks this season … credited with one-and-a-half tackles for loss, marking his sixth consecutive game with a tackle for loss … also carded a season-high six tackles in the win.
QB ANTHONY BOONE: Earned first starting assignment of his career, becoming the 52nd different player to start at the position for Duke since 1950 … completed 18-of-31 pass attempts for 212 yards and four touchdowns, setting career highs in all three categories … tossed a 54-yard scoring strike to Jamison Crowder at 10:50 in the first quarter to surpass his previous career-long of 51 yards … threw two touchdown passes in the first seven minutes of action after entering the game with two career touchdown passes … with a 45-yard touchdown pass to Vernon at 14:12 in the fourth quarter, equaled the Duke record held by Dave Brown (1989 vs. Wake Forest) with four touchdown passes in his first career start at the position … also finished the day with seven rushes, matching his career-high with 41 yards.
S JORDON BYAS: Recorded 11 tackles on the day, matching the career-high he established in the win over Wake Forest … also credited with a career-best 1.5 tackles for loss.
S WALT CANTY: Finished the game with a season-high 14 tackles … reached double digits in the tackle column for the third time this year and the ninth time in his career … also reached the 200-tackle plateau for his career, finishing the game at 206 overall … also finished with a career-high three tackles for loss and one quarterback hurry.
CB ROSS COCKRELL: Tallied his fourth interception of the season and eighth of his career with a pick at 12:17 in the fourth quarter … also recorded one PBU, claiming sole possession of eighth place on the Duke career list with 25, two shy of the record held by Matt Daniels … now has 11 PBUs over the past eight games and five interceptions over the last seven games … also tallied six tackles in the win.
WR JAMISON CROWDER: Hauled in a 54-yard touchdown reception from Anthony Boone on the Blue Devils’ first drive of the game … the catch was his second touchdown reception of 50 or more yards this season, tying him for third on Duke’s single-season chart … finished the game with four catches for 84 yards.
RB JELA DUNCAN: Scampered 11 yards into the end zone with 7:30 remaining in the third quarter for the second touchdown of his career … rushed 10 times on the day for 41 yards ... reached the end zone for the second straight games ... now has 185 yards on 30 carries over the last three games.
CB TONY FOSTER: Recorded the first interception of his career with 9:31 remaining in the first quarter … matched career-highs with two PBUs and seven tackles.
LB CJ FRANCE: Posted one-half of a tackle for loss for the first TFL of his career … also carded five tackles in the win.
K ROSS MARTIN: Was successful on 6-of-6 PATs on the day, bringing his season total to 27-of-27, marking the highest number of PATs without a miss by a Duke rookie … the six PATs on the day also match his own mark for the second-highest total by a freshman in school history … carded his fourth game this season with at least five PATs … now has totaled 51 points, passing Brandon Connette for second on Duke’s freshman single-season scoring list.
P WILL MONDAY: Finished the day with nine punts for 423 yards, averaging 47 yards per punt … the 47.0 average is tied for the third-highest average by a Blue Devil freshman … booted three punts of 50 or more yards and also placed three inside the 20-yard line.
S DWAYNE NORMAN: Matched a career-high with eight tackles on the day.
WR DESMOND SCOTT: Caught three passes for 14 yards … extended his streak of consecutive games with at least one pass reception to 32, marking the seventh-longest active streak in the nation and the fifth-longest streak in Duke history trailing Conner Vernon (41; active), Donovan Varner (37), Scottie Montgomery (35) & Randy Cuthbert (34) … pushed his streak of consecutive games with at least two catches to 14 … has now caught two or more passes in 28 games, matching the 10th-highest career total in Duke history.
RB JUWAN THOMPSON: Caught a 12-yard touchdown pass from Anthony Boone with 11:46 remaining in the third quarter for his first touchdown of the season and second receiving TD of his career … also ran 34 yards into the end zone for another score late in the fourth quarter for his first rushing TD of the season and eighth of his career … finished with seven rushes for a season-high 71 yards and the second-highest total of his career.
WR CONNER VERNON: Finished the day with seven receptions for 93 yards with two touchdowns … became the ACC’s all-time leader in pass receptions with a catch at the nine-minute mark in the first quarter, surpassing the previous standard of 232 held by Clemson’s Aaron Kelly … now owns 239 career pass receptions … caught a 37-yard touchdown pass from Boone in the first quarter and added a 45-yard touchdown reception in the fourth quarter ... now has 18 TD receptions to move into fifth place all-time at Duke … remained in fourth place on the ACC’s all-time chart for receiving yardage with 3,230 yards … is now just 88 yards shy of the Duke career mark of 3,318 yards set by Clarkston Hines … is now just 287 yards short of the ACC career mark of 3,517 held by Florida State’s Peter Warrick … extended own school record for most games with two or more receptions with 40 … extended his own school record streak of consecutive games with at least one reception to 41 – also the longest active streak in the nation – and is now four games shy of the ACC record of 45 held by North Carolina’s Corey Holliday … extended his streak of consecutive games with at least two receptions to 21 – the third-longest streak in Duke history behind Hines (28) and Varner (27) … has registered five or more pass receptions in all six games this season, matching the fifth-longest streak in Duke history … now owns 29 career games with five or more catches … also returned one punt for 25 yards.
