CARY, N.C. – The tandem of sophomore Raphael Hemmeler and senior Henrique Cunha advanced to the finals of the doubles competition on the fourth day of action at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Carolina Regional Sunday at the Cary Tennis Park.
Playing in the quarterfinals of the doubles main draw, the top-seeded duo of Cunha and Hemmeler defeated North Carolina’s Nelson Vick and Hess-Olesen, 8-4. The Duke duo then used an early break in their semifinal contest against fourth-seeded Dominique Maden and Yannick Maden of Clemson to record an 8-4 victory. Cunha and Hemmeler will now face UNC Wilmington’s Kosta Blank and Chris Cooprider in Monday's final, with the winner advancing to the ITA National Indoor Championships Nov. 8-11 in Flushing Meadows, N.Y.
The Blue Devils also had several players participating in the semifinals of the singles draw Sunday in Cary, with top-ranked Cunha taking on Elon's Cameron Silverman. After dropping the first three games in the first set, Cunha came back strong to win three straight games of his own. Silverman responded with a break point at 6-5 and held serve to take the first set, 7-5. After rallying to win the second set, 6-3, the Jau, Brazil native could not hold the momentum in the third and was defeated, 7-5, 3-6, 6-4. Cunha now owns a 10-2 singles record for the fall season
Junior Chris Mengel, the second-seeded player in the tournament, faced North Carolina’s Esben Hess-Olesen in the other semifinal singles match. After earning a break for a 6-5 edge in the first set, the junior could not hold off Hess-Olesen in the tiebreaker and second set, falling by scores of 7-6 (5), 6-2.
Monday’s doubles final is slated to begin at 10 a.m. at the Cary Tennis Park, with singles scheduled to follow at 1 p.m.
