DURHAM, N.C. - Behind a strong pitching performance and clutch, two-out hitting, Team Black jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the Duke University baseball team's best-of-seven Fall World Series.
Sophomore Dalton Brown, aided by an outstanding defensive effort including a tremendous diving grab by sophomore Grant McCabe, pitched four scoreless innings to pick up the win.
Black got on the board in the second when junior Matt Berezo led off with a double and later scored on a groundball double play. Black extended its lead to 3-0 in the fifth when junior Mike Rosenfeld scorched a two-out, two-RBI double just inside the bag down the left field line. Black tacked on its fourth run in the top of the seventh on junior David Perkins' two-out, RBI single.
Down 4-0, Team Blue looked to mount a rally in the bottom of the seventh as junior Angelo La Bruna led off the inning with a double to left field. A one-out, RBI single off the bat of sophomore Andrew Istler cut the lead to three, but freshman Nick Hendrix, who pitched three strong innings of relief for Black, coaxed a pop fly to left and a tapper back to the mound to end the rally.
Istler was the tough-luck loser for Blue, giving up one earned run on three hits over three innings of work.
The first pitch of game two is scheduled for 10 a.m., Saturday, November 3.
