DURHAM, N.C. – The Slam Magazine preseason college basketball issue has hit the newsstands with the Duke women’s basketball team earning a No. 3 ranking in its top 10 preview.

The Blue Devils have now been preseason ranked No. 2 by Athlon, No. 3 in the Associated Press and USA Today Coaches Poll and No. 3 in the Lindy’s Magazine ledger.

Taking the top slot in the Slam Magazine poll was Connecticut, while Baylor, Duke, Kentucky, Penn State, Stanford, Tennessee, Maryland, Notre Dame and Vanderbilt.

Duke concluded its exhibition action on Sunday with a 118-27 victory over Queens University of Charlotte.  In the contest, junior Haley Peters tallied 20 points and 21 rebounds, while junior Chelsea Gray added 24 points, nine rebounds, eight steals and seven assists.  Freshman Alexis Jones came off the bench to register 22 points, nine assists and nine rebounds.

In two exhibition games, the Blue Devils averaged 128.0 points, hit 61.0 percent of their field goals and 58.6 percent from downtown.  Tricia Liston averaged a team-best 24.5 points to go along with 10.5 boards, while Peters averaged 17.5 points and 19.5 rebounds.  A total of seven Duke student-athletes averaged double-figure scoring in the two contests – Gray (22.0), Jones (19.0), Allison Vernerey (16.5), Sierra Moore (14.5) and Ka’lia Johnson (12.5).

Preseason All-America Elizabeth Williams did not play in both exhibition contests due to an injury but the Blue Devils are hoping to have her back by the season open on Saturday, Nov. 17 at 7:00 p.m., against Presbyterian.

Duke is coming off posting a 27-6 record a year ago under the direction of head coach Joanne P. McCallie.  The two-time ACC Coach of the Year enters her sixth season with the Blue Devils and returns four starters, 10 letter winners and 88.7 percent of their scoring from the 2011-12 campaign.

The Blue Devils feature three straight home contests to open the season on Nov. 17 (Presbyterian), Nov. 18 (Iona) and Nov. 23 (Valparaiso).
