DURHAM, N.C. - Following last Saturday's home meet against Atlantic Coast Conference opponents NC State and Miami, several members of the men's and women's swimming and diving teams have maintained spots in CollegeSwimming.com's national rankings in their respective events.
Senior Ben Hwang remains tied with Mark Weber of Florida State for the top time in the nation in the men's 50-yard freestyle. Hwang posted an NCAA provisional qualifying mark of 20.03 in the Blue Devils' season opener at the All-North Carolina Invitational, held at the beginning of October. Hwang also ranks 32nd in the country in the 100 freestyle (45.09)
Breaking into the national rankings in the men's 100 backstroke this week was junior Steven Gasparini, who set a Taishoff Aquatic Pavilion record last Saturday with a 49.88 clocking and a first-place finish in the event. Meanwhile, fellow junior Hunter Knight moved up seven spots nationally to a No. 22 ranking in the 100 breaststroke, notching a time of 55.92, which is also good for the second-best clocking in the ACC to date. Knight is currently ranked 40th in the country in the 200 breaststroke after touching at 2:04.14 in Duke's home opener against Florida State, UNC Wilmington and Virginia Tech on Oct. 27.
The men's 200 freestyle relay of freshman Romain Decrop, senior Adam Flur, freshman Sam Skinner and Hwang comes in at 10th in the nation and third in the ACC with a 1:21.96 clocking at the All-North Carolina Invitational. The Blue Devil men are also ranked among the top 40 nationally in the 400 freestyle (3:03.40), 200 medley (1:31.87) and 400 medley relays (3:23.86).
The Duke women also feature three relays ranked among the top 25 nationally, including the 200 freestyle relay (28th), 200 medley relay (22nd) and the 400 medley relay (22nd).
Individually, junior Christine Wixted leads the way for the Blue Devil women with a pair of national rankings in the 100 and 200 breaststroke. The Greenwood Village, Colo., native owns the top time in the ACC and 15th-best mark in the nation at the 100-yard distance after grabbing an NCAA 'B' cut and a new Taishoff Aquatic Pavilion record last weekend at 1:02.01. Wixted also ranks second in the conference and 30th nationally in the 200 breaststroke at 2:16.50, and 43rd in the country in the 200 IM (2:04.42).
Junior Lauren Weaver comes in at 26th in the country and fifth in the ACC with a 23.23 mark in the 50 freestyle.
Duke resumes competition Nov. 15-17 at the Tennessee Invitational in Knoxville, Tenn. The Blue Devil divers will also be in action Nov. 15-17 at the Nike Cup Invitational in Durham and Chapel Hill, N.C.
