DURHAM, N.C. - The 2012-13 college basketball season is officially underway, and the Blue Devils wasted no time in picking up their first win, a 74-55 victory over Georgia State in Cameron Indoor Stadium on Friday. The Blue Devils used a suffocating defensive effort to hold the Panthers to 37.3 percent shooting from the floor while forcing 16 turnovers and blocking six shots. Four of those blocks came from senior forward Mason Plumlee, who dominated in the paint and finished with a team-high 19 points and 14 rebounds for his 15th career double-double.
Plumlee was one of three Blue Devils to score in double figures, leading fellow senior Seth Curry, who had 15 points, and junior point guard Tyler Thornton, who matched a career high with 13 points. The starting quintet of Plumlee, Curry, Thornton, senior Ryan Kelly and freshman Rasheed Sulaimon combined to score 61 of Duke's 74 points, while sophomore point guard Quinn Cook came off the bench to contribute eight points and a pair of assists.
A season-opening win is nothing new for the Blue Devils, who have not lost the first game of the year in their last 13 tries. Coach K is 30-2 in season opener as Duke's head coach. Duke also extended its non-conference home win streak to 95 consecutive games, the longest active streak in the NCAA and tied for the longest such streak in school history.
Duke Faces Reigning National Champion Kentucky Saturday Duke's schedule is annually one of the toughest in the country, and the 2012-13 season is no exception. The Blue Devils take on the reigning national champion Kentucky Wildcats - ranked No. 3 in the nation in both the AP and coaches polls - this Tuesday in the Georgia Dome in Atlanta, Ga., at the State Farm Champions Classic. Kentucky is one of two Final Four teams that Duke will face this season and one of 11 games against 2012 NCAA Tournament teams. The game will pit two of college basketball's all-time winningest programs against one another, as Duke and Kentucky are two of only four members of the elite 1,900-win club. Duke is 8-11 all-time against the Wildcats and 4-1 under Coach K.
Curry & Plumlee Named to Wooden Award Watch List The Wooden Award, which each year goes the top college basketball player in the nation, released its preseason top 50 list on ESPN Thursday, and two Blue Devils - seniors Seth Curry and Mason Plumlee - earned spots on the watch list. If history is any indication, those two have as good a shot as any of the other 48 players to win as a record five Duke players have won the Wooden Award since it began in 1977. The next closest school is North Carolina, which has four winners. Duke's most recent winner was J.J. Redick in 2006, followed by Jason Williams (2002), Shane Battier (2001), Elton Brand (1999) and Christian Laettner (1992).
