DURHAM, N.C. - The Duke baseball team stepped away from its off-season workouts Tuesday to spend time volunteering at Bright Star Farm Therapy Center, a facility which provides animal assisted therapy to children with special needs.

Located in Trenton, N.C., Bright Star Farm Therapy Center provides speech therapy to children in a natural setting with a variety of farm animals, including miniature and full-size horses, ducks, turtles, rabbits, cats and goats.

The Blue Devils provided valuable support, helping with a variety of projects currently underway on the 15-acre farm. Under the direction of sport performance coach Dan Perlmutter, the team put its offseason conditioning to the test with sledge hammers and shovels in hand. After helping take the horses from the stables to the pasture, the Blue Devils participated in demolition work at one of the stables undergoing renovations and also built a land bridge over a new drainage culvert.

Duke finishes its month-long offseason program Monday, Dec. 3. The Blue Devils open the season at perennial power Florida February 15.
